Guide to Jàvea (Xàbia)

We’ve written a complete guide to the Javea area, and linked to helpful resources throughout to help you plan the trip of a lifetime.

Where is Jàvea (Xàbia)?

Jàvea (Xàbia) is a small, Spanish coastal town located in the province of Alicante, in the Comunidad Valenciana located in the east of Spain. Jàvea sits between Alicante and Valencia, and is one of the closest towns in Mainland Spain to see the island of Ibiza.

Jàvea is a popular destination for tourists who want a taste of Spanish lifestyle. Javea has a wide range of natural attractions and fun activities that can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages, making it a great place to visit with friends or family.

Jàvea is quite widespread and consists of 3 main parts: the Old Town, tthe Port, and the Arenal beach, where locals and visitors stay, which we cover below.

Jàvea Port

Jávea Port is a large fishing port with a bustling town nearby full of local restaurants, bars and shops. It is also home to the Playa de la Grava beach, and an expansive promenade that overlooks the sea.

Jávea Port Promenade

The port of Jávea has a small yet sophisticated fishing fleet that operates during the week and sells its catches at the local fish market. Local restaurants and Jávea’s Michelin-star restaurants visit the fish market daily to serve up the latest catches of the day, and the market is also available later to the public.

If you’re looking for a quieter yet beautiful place to enjoy the sea, local restaurants, and bars, and even a cinema, you’ll love the port. The port is located literally in the heart of Jávea. It’s only a short drive, or a pleasant walk to both the Old Town and the Arenal beach.

Jàvea Old Town

Jávea’s Old Town is a historic centre of Jávea, dating back over seven centuries to the medieval era. Its winding alleys and tosca stone buildings retain their traditional architectural charm, even today, serving as remnants of Jávea’s Moorish past.

The Old Town is widely known for its San Bartolomé de Jávea Church, a beautiful Elizabethan Gothic 18th-century church located in the centre of the town. Surrounding the church is a charming, lively square called Plaça de l’Església, often filled with locals and tourists alike. Throughout the year, the square serves as a social hub, hosting various events from live music performances to festive gatherings.

The narrow streets mazing around the old town are lined with specialist, independent shops offering handmade goods, and many restaurants and bars. The Old Town also hosts the Thursday local produce market, as well as the daily Municipal market.

It also serves as a home to Jávea’s local festivals, from Semana Santa, San Sebastian, Carnaval and more, so there is always an event around the corner.

Jàvea Arenal

Jávea’s Playa del Arenal, or Arenal Beach, spans over 480 metres along the central bay. This beach is the only sandy beach in Jávea, featuring coarse golden sand and shallow waters. Its prime location and things to do makes Arenal the central tourist hub in the area, and one of the most popular beaches for swimmers and sunbathers in Jávea.
