Guide to Javea Markets

I’ve listed the vibrant local markets of Javea in this guide. From fresh produce and handcrafted goods to traditional clothing and souvenirs, Javea’s markets offer a traditional taste of the Spanish lifestyle. They’re also a really pleasant thing to do in Javea during the day. I will help you explore the colourful stalls, indulge in delicious local foods, and take home a piece of Javea to remember your trip.

I’ll discuss the best local markets in Javea and what they have to offer.

Javea Market (Every Thursday throughout the year)

The Javea market is held every Thursday in the square “Plaza de la Constitución” in the Javea Old Town. It features a wide range of stalls selling fresh produce, clothing, ornaments, tapestry, leather goods, and more.

The Javea Market is a great way to experience local life in Javea and find unique, locally-made products. It is also an excellent place to sample some traditional Spanish foods and snacks such as Catalan Pizza (cocas). This Javea market is based in the heart of the old town, and is not too far from Casa Della Pasta, one of the best restaurants in Javea I recommend visiting.

It’s open every Thursday from 8am to 2pm.

Javea Municipal Market (Monday to Saturday)

The Javea Municipal Market is an indoor food market that takes place every day at the Plaza Celestino Pons. The market contains an array of food stalls, containing meats, fresh fruit and veg, deli items, fish (and salted fish), homemade baked goods, and cheese.

There are also a few bars and cafes with sitting areas located inside the market, which makes for a pleasant spot to meet up for a drink and bite to eat.

The Javea municipal market runs from Monday to Friday, from 8am to 2pm, and then open later from 5pm until 8pm.

On Saturdays, the market runs from 8:15am until 2pm in the afternoon.

Market Del Riurau (every Sunday in Jesús Pobre)

Situated 15 minutes drive from Javea, sits the small traditional Spanish village of Jesús Pobre, which is nested on the hills between Javea and Denia, surrounded by flat valley fields which grow orange, almond and olive trees. Jesús Pobre is home to the Market Del Riurau (also known as the Farmer’s market). This market is well worth the visit – from food, wares, entertainment and scenic pretty views, you absolutely need to visit once during your trip to Javea. Nearby Jesus Pobre is also the La Sella Golf resort, one of the best golf courses near Javea.

Jesús Pobre is well-loved for its excellent local fresh produce, as its all harvested from their fields and sold in the Market Del Riurau.

I recommend buying their tomatoes as they’re so immensely flavourful in any salad or even by themselves with some mozzarella! Also, their olive oil is some of the best you’ll find in the region, hand-picked from their olive trees and the oil made locally by the farmers, ready to be sold in the market. It’s well worth the price as the quality is sublime.

Make sure to also sample some of the baked goods at Jesus Pobre’s market. From Spanish Sponge Cake (Bizcocho) Catalan pizza (coca) and classics including carrot cake, chocolate cake and more, everything is homemade and absolutely delicious. They offer very generous positions too!

The market not only offers food, but also crafts, handmade accessories, woven bags, and unique, handmade ornaments, you’ll be sure to spend time exploring everything on offer and bring home something special.

If you’re not to fussed about buying food and wares, visiting the Market Del Riurau for the entertainment is a must – there are drink stalls offering icy cold beer and wine, which you can take to the many seating areas in the market. They pour these drinks in exclusive Market Del Riurau plastic cups that you can take as a souvenir home! You can also set up your own area with friends or family with your own deck chairs and tables and have your own picnic while marvelling at the entertainment views, and energetic atmosphere. No doubt you’ll also jump up and dance to the live music!

I highly recommend visiting the Jesus Pobre farmer’s market during the summer. The market is held in the early evening until late at night, making it a much cooler visit and one of the most unique experiences the Javea area has to offer. Live music is played throughout the event and you can often see locals and visitors dancing late into the night, with a beer in hand. It truly is a special market, with picturesque sunset views and beautiful music.

In the summer hours (Early July until September) start at 6pm until 11pm.
